The Trevor Project

Posted on June 13, 2010 at 8:35 AM

The Trevor Project is a non-profit endeavor established to promote acceptance for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth and to aid in crisis and suicide prevention among that group. Every day, The Trevor Project saves young lives through its free and confidential helpline, in-school workshops, educational materials, online resources and advocacy. The Trevor Helpline is the only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention helpline for LGBTQ youth. The Trevor Helpline is a free and confidential service that offers hope and someone to talk to, 24/7. Each year, tens of thousands of calls are fielded from young people across the country. The Trevor Helpline is accredited as an exemplary crisis intervention program by the American Association of Suicidology (AAS).

This month (June) is National Gay Pride month, as an Alie I'm showing my support for the LBGTQ community by spreading the word. So if you haven't read already the Trevor Project

is the leading (and first) national organization focused on crisis and suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ youth.

Here's some facts:

  • In America, more than 32,000 people die by suicide each year (2005 Center for Disease Control).
  • Suicide is one of the top three causes of death among 15 to 24-year-olds; only accidents and homicide occur more frequently (2006 National Adolescent Health Information).
  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college campuses (2008 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
  • For every completed suicide by a young person, it is estimated that 100 to200 attempts are made (2003 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey).
  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers(Massachusetts 2006 Youth Risk Survey).
  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth who come from a rejecting family are up to nine times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers (2007 San Francisco State University Chavez Center Institute).

Suicide Risk Tips:

  • A tendency toward isolation and social withdrawal Increased substance abuse
  • Expression of negative attitude toward self
  • Expression of helplessness or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in usual sorts of pleasure
  • Giving away valued possessions
  • Expression of a lack of future orientation (i.e. “It won’t matter soon anyway”;)

If you know anyone (or if you are) that is LGBTQ and is depressed and or considering suicide please contact The Trevor Project as soon as possible.
